Our Photos & Printing Technology
How are your photographs printed?
Are your photographs printed on an ink-jet printer?
Are your photographs film or digital?
All our photographs are digital. We use a Nikon® D70 Digital Single-Lens Reflex (D-SLR) camera with a Nikon 18-70mm wide-angle lens and a Tamron 70-300mm telephoto lens.
Why does the color in my photo not exactly match the color on my monitor?
There are three main reasons. The first is unavoidable: colors on a monitor are created by emitted light, whereas colors on a photographic print are created by reflected light. The way that color is created in these two systems is very different, and therefore differences in color are inherent.
The second reason is that the gamut, or range of possible colors, on a monitor is much larger than the gamut of the photographic printer. Therefore, some colors (especially bright ones) look toned-down in a photograph.
The third possible reason is that your monitor may not be calibrated properly. An improperly calibrated monitor interprets colors incorrectly. To do a quick-and-dirty monitor calibration, visit DisplayCalibration.com and perform the “Brightness and Contrast” and “Color Depth” calibrations. Better, more expensive calibration tools are also available.

Matted Prints
How do I add a print to my Shopping Cart?
To add a print to your shopping cart, first find an image you like in our photo gallery and click on it to reach the image display page. At the bottom of the page, click the “Matted Print” icon in the “Add to Cart” interface. The “Add a Print to your Shopping Cart” window will appear.
First, choose a mat size by clicking that size under “Click to Select a Mat Size.” Next, choose an inner mat color using the drop-down menu under “Select a Mat Color.” The mat color we recommend is already selected. For more information on selecting a mat color, click here.
Third, select any additional options for your print. All prints from Scenic New England Photography are mounted and double-matted, though you can opt to receive an unmatted print for the same price. You can choose to have us frame your print by clicking the appropriate checkbox.
Finally, click “Add Print to Cart” and you’re done!

What is mounting? Why are all your prints mounted?
Our prints are mounted by bonding the photographic paper to 2mm-thick styrene plastic sheet. Mounting prevents the print from sagging, warping, wrinkling, or deforming over time. All professional-grade photographic products are mounted to give them a longer life span.
What is matting? Why are your prints matted?
Matting is a colored paperboard that borders the print, acting as a buffer between the print and frame. For example, a print approximately 8” by 12” is matted to fit a frame that measures 12” by 16”, giving a pleasing appearance.
All our prints are matted with a double mat, using an ivory outer mat and an inner mat color of your choice. Double matting with a neutral outer color is the best way to highlight an image without overpowering it, and gives the most professional appearance.
The color of the inner mat should be selected to highlight and complement the image. For example, placing a brilliant orange sunset photo in a dark blue mat will cause the colors to stand out, whereas a red mat would dull the colors. For each print, we have recommended a mat color that we feel best complements the image, though you can select the mat color that best suits your taste. If in doubt, select black, which looks quite nice on almost any image.
How do I select or change my print’s mat color?
You select an inner mat color when adding the print to your cart (the outer mat of our double mat is always ivory). Follow the instructions on Adding a Print to your Cart to select a mat color for your print.
Unfortunately you cannot change the mat color once your print has been added to your Cart. However, it is simple to add a new print to your Cart with the new mat color. First visit the Shopping Cart, then click on the image icon of the print you wish to change. You’ll reach the image display page. Add the print to your cart again, selecting the desired mat color, and then remove the old print from your cart.
What framing options are available with your prints?
What size frame should I purchase?
Since there are so many framing options available, we feel that many customers will want to purchase their own frame for our matted prints. It’s easy — just drop our matted print straight into the frame and you’re done! Select a frame size equivalent to the mat size of your print. For example, if you purchased a print matted to 12” x 16”, purchase a frame of that size. Make sure the frame is deep enough to accommodate art that is ¼” thick.
If, instead, you want us to frame your print with a tasteful black metal frame that will complement and enhance, we are pleased to offer this option. Simply select the “Framed” option when adding your print to the Shopping Cart.
Our frames are high-quality, sturdy, black brushed-aluminum frames. View photos of our frames to see for yourself. Our 8”x10” and 12”x16” frames have a 5/16”-wide profile, while our 18”x24” and 24”x36” frames have a 3/4”-wide profile.
