Eric Clapton
Unplugged
1992

The other day I started playing around with EC's
Unplugged album, and discovered a wealth of
fingerpicking songs which are easy to play and
build technique wonderfully. I have been looking
for something to further my picking styles, and I
finally found it here. This is a really cool song
which has some great picking and tough riffs, so
work on this and it will make you a better player.

The basis of this song is the recurrent motion within chords to lead the song through to the next chord. These are what I will call "riffs" and they are the most important part of this song and they are basically what this song will teach you. Remember, to do these riffs, keep your chord formations and use the fingers that you don't use for the chord to fool around with the added notes. Also, remember that Clapton and I fret notes on the sixth string with your thumb (see Clapton Lesson #1). INTRO: A E/A A E/A A E/A A E/A + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + e:--------------|---------0-------|-0---------------|-----0-----0-----|---0-------------| B:--------------|-2-----0-0-----2-|-2-------0-------|-2---2-0---0---2-|---2-----0-------| G:--------------|-2-----1-------2-|---------1-------|-2-----1-------2-|---------1-------| D:--------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| A:------------0-|-----0---------0-|-------0---------|-0-----0-------0-|-------0---------| E:--------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| A E/A A E/A A + + + + + + + + + + + + e:-----0-----0-----|---0-------------|-----0-----0-----| B:-2---2-0---0---2-|---2-----0-------|-2---2-0---0---2-| G:-2-----1-------2-|---------1-------|-2-----1-------2-| D:-----------------|-----------------|---------------2-| A:-0-----0-------0-|-------0---------|-0-----0-------0-| E:-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|

Now, Rhythm Figure 1 shown above progresses into Rhythm Figure 2. Part of the last measure above is repeated for clarity.Rhythm Figure 2 A D/F#(add9) E7sus4 E7 A + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + e:----------------|---0-------0-----|---0-------0-----|---0-------0-----|---0-------------| B:--------0-----2-|---2-----2-2---3-|---3-----3-3---3-|---3-----3-3---3-|---3-----0-----2-| G:----------2p1-2-|---------2-----2-|---------2-----2-|---------2-----1-|-----------2h1-2-| D:----------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| A:--------------0-|-------0---------|-----------------|-----------------|---------------0-| E:------0---------|---------------2-|-------2-------0-|-------0-------0-|-------0---------| (what's shown above repeats twice here)
Go into Rhythm Figure 1 once more Play Rhythm Figure 2 twice more Then play the following, from the E7 at the end of Rhythm Fig. 2:

Now, play Rythm Fig. 2 six times andend with this little figure: E7 A(addA) + + + + + + + + e:---0-------------|-^5---------------| B:---3-----0-------|-^2---------------| G:-----------2p1---|-^2---------------| D:-------2---------|-^2---------------| A:-----------------|-^0---------------| E:-----------------|------------------| That's it for this little song. It's really simple in terms of amount of material, but the picking and riffs are a bit complex so work on this and it will help you get better. If you have any questions, e-mail me.
